Grenzübergangsstelle Marienborn (border crossing Marienborn) was the main border crossing on the Inner German border during the division of Germany from 1949 to 1990. It manifests the segregation between western democracy and the communist state of East Germany. Through systematic means of control, all vehicles and passengers entering the east German state were meticulously searched for weapons, radios, and other objects deemed illegal.

This photographic project examines the structures required for such meticulous surveillance. The place is permeated by an eerily vast emptiness. Once sprawling with routines its only contents now are memories of harassment and the idea of a glorious state that never was.
